World Cup History
France are two-time World Cup champions (1998, 2018) and one of the most decorated nations in tournament history. Their 17 appearances span nearly a century, from the inaugural 1930 tournament to back-to-back finals in 2018 and 2022.
The 1998 triumph on home soil remains the defining moment of French football · Zinedine Zidane's two headers in the final against Brazil turned a nation into believers. Twenty years later, Didier Deschamps won the title as manager in Russia, becoming only the third person to win the World Cup as both player and coach.
In Qatar 2022, France came agonizingly close to becoming the first team to retain the trophy since Brazil in 1962. Kylian Mbappe's hat-trick in the final against Argentina, including two goals in 97 seconds to force extra time, was one of the greatest individual performances in World Cup history. The penalty shootout defeat only sharpened France's hunger for 2026.
