World Cup History
Germany are four-time World Cup champions (1954, 1974, 1990, 2014) and the most consistent nation in tournament history with 20 appearances. No country has reached more World Cup finals, and only Brazil has won more titles.
The 1954 Miracle of Bern gave West Germany their first title in a stunning upset over Hungary. The 1974 triumph on home soil was built on the genius of Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Muller. 1990 in Italy saw Andreas Brehme's penalty secure a third crown, and 2014 in Brazil delivered the iconic 7-1 semi-final demolition of the hosts before Mario Gotze's extra-time winner in the final against Argentina.
Recent tournaments have been turbulent. Germany suffered back-to-back group stage exits in 2018 and 2022 · the first as defending champions in Russia, then falling to Japan and Costa Rica in Qatar. Under Julian Nagelsmann, a rebuilt squad centered on Musiala and Wirtz impressed at Euro 2024 on home soil, signaling a return to contender status heading into 2026.
