World Cup History
The United States have a rich but rollercoaster World Cup history spanning 11 appearances since the inaugural 1930 tournament. Their best finish came at that first World Cup in Uruguay · semi-finals, third place · a result that still stands as their peak.
The 1950 upset of England (1–0 in Belo Horizonte) remains one of the greatest shocks in World Cup history. After a 40-year absence, the US returned and became consistent participants, highlighted by a quarter-final run in 2002 · beating Portugal and Mexico before falling to Germany.
The painful failure to qualify for Russia 2018 led to a complete overhaul. The current golden generation emerged, returning to the Round of 16 in Qatar 2022. Now, as co-hosts in 2026, they face the highest expectations in the program's history.
